Cultural Trips

Our students learn by experiencing the different.

Each year every student has the option of taking part in a cultural trip tied to what they're studying in social studies. Trips have taken Ohana students to Europe, Asia, Australia, Central and South America, and across the United States.

Every trip is designed to pull students out of their comfort zone and into the world. Our students have studied language in Cauterets, France, served families in Nicaragua, provided medical care in Cusco and the Sacred Valley of Peru, and come home each time with broader perspective and deeper empathy.

Ohana service trips opened my eyes to the world. Traveling to Nicaragua helped me discover my passion for serving others, and this summer in Peru I had the opportunity to provide medical care to the people of Cusco and the Sacred Valley. These experiences have shaped who I am and inspired me to continue making a difference wherever I go.Marin Mangum, Ohana senior

How a trip works

Trips grow out of the curriculum. A class studying the American founding goes to Williamsburg, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C. A class studying Europe goes to Spain and France. Students prepare for weeks, studying the history, language, and economy of the place, and they document the trip for the families and classmates who stayed home. Service trips to our sister school, CREA, in Nicaragua add another layer: students paint libraries, deliver resources, and practice their Spanish while Ohana teachers train Nicaraguan educators in STEAM.
